In this award the judges are looking for a stylist or barber that consistently and successfully delivers on key business measures as well as providing exceptional service to their clients.
The Best Salon Design award celebrates a business that perfectly balances both form and function within their salon, spa, clinic or barbershop. From interior design to floor plan and location, the winning business provides the perfect look and feel for its target market while being practical and fit-for-purpose for their team.
Awarded to the best “all-round” barbering apprentice, the Barbering Apprentice of the Year must show commitment to their training and the desire to improve in all areas, whilst demonstrating how they’d be a worthy ambassador for HITO and the industry.
The Industry Assessor of the Year award acknowledges an individual who offers excellent service to HITO and our apprentices.
The Workplace of the Year is awarded to a barbershop, beauty clinic or hairdressing salon that offers exceptional training to HITO apprentices. The employer must show a strong commitment to training and qualifications and have an excellent record of training success in their business.

The Editorial Barber awards are for New Zealand barbers who are H&BNZ members (formerlly NZARH) wanting to expand their personal brand through photographic competition success. Barbers demonstrate the ability to compliment and highlight masculine features through design, shape, styling and grooming. This category showcases expertise, dedication and mastery in men’s styling, barbering and grooming.
The Hot Shot – New Talent award is given to a barber who is enrolled in a full-time barbering course at an H&BNZ (formerly NZARH) member Training Provider and has been in the industry for less than 12 months (as at 31 October 2021). It celebrates students by giving them a chance to showcase their creative talents.
This particular award is given to a barber who has been employed within the barber industry for less than four years (as at 31 October 2021) to celebrate the talent of the future of the industry.
This award is an Instagram challenge set by internationally acclaimed barber Matt Brown. Barbers create fashion forward looks that draw inspiration from popular culture, ethnic backgrounds, fashion trends and music, new and recycled. This award is open to H&BNZ members (formerly NZARH) who have been in the industry for over 4 years. In this challenge, barbers are asked to create a look that is influenced by 90's hip hop. Matt wants to see creativity, shape, technical ability and a “wow factor”: a look that draws inspiration from the trends of 90's hip hop but is made fresh with a 2020's focus.
